Why the status appears
Google may group similar URLs and select one representative canonical. “Duplicate without user-selected canonical” means the site did not provide a clear preferred URL for the duplicate group, or the available signals were not strong and consistent enough.
Choose the URL that should be indexed
Select one clean, stable URL that serves the complete content. Decide how protocol, hostname, trailing slash, capitalization, parameters, print views, tracking URLs, and alternate paths should resolve.
Use the appropriate consolidation method
- Use a one-hop 301 redirect when an alternate URL should no longer remain accessible.
- Use a self-referencing canonical on the preferred indexable page.
- Use a canonical from a necessary duplicate to the substantially equivalent preferred URL.
- Do not canonicalize unrelated or weak pages to the homepage.
Make every supporting signal agree
Internal links should point to the preferred URL. XML sitemaps should contain only the canonical version. Hreflang, structured data, feeds, and navigation should not continue advertising duplicate variants. Redirect chains and mixed HTTP/HTTPS links should be removed.
Verify the result
After deployment, crawl the site to find conflicting canonicals and duplicate inlinks. Use Search Console URL Inspection to compare the user-declared and Google-selected canonical. Recrawling and consolidation can take time.
